Responding to a Need
The roots of Don Bosco Namakkal go back to the late 1990s, when a study by the Salem Anbu Illam Social Service Society highlighted the difficult realities faced by many marginalised children and youth in the region. Many were engaged in harsh labour, while others were deeply affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis in their families, often facing hardship, stigma, and exclusion.
The Vision Takes Shape
Moved by this reality, the Salesians began focused interventions for youth at risk and vulnerable children. As the need became clearer, the vision for a dedicated home gradually took shape. It received formal approval during the Provincial Chapter in 2004, and construction of the home began in 2007.
A Home Begins
The mission became a reality with the arrival of seventeen children, the first residents of the home. Many came from families affected by HIV/AIDS and other difficult circumstances. On 5 December 2008, Don Bosco Namakkal was officially inaugurated as a place of care, protection, and hope.
Growing in Mission
Over the years, Don Bosco Namakkal expanded through the dedication of leaders, collaborators, and well-wishers. While the mission grew in many directions, its central commitment remained the same: to accompany children and young people from vulnerable backgrounds with dignity, compassion, and opportunity.
Expanding Outreach
A major step came in 2018 with the start of a government-supported NCLP School for school dropouts. In 2020, the Salesians were invited to administer Christ King Matriculation Higher Secondary School, further expanding the institution’s educational mission. Alongside this, outreach initiatives such as evening study centres, migrant ministry, study circles, tailoring programmes, eco-clubs, and summer camps also began to flourish.
Don Bosco Namakkal Today
Today, Don Bosco Namakkal is a home of care and protection for children in vulnerable situations, especially children of parents affected by HIV/AIDS. It has also grown into a centre of learning, empowerment, and social outreach, continuing its journey of care, opportunity, and hope.
